"Meet the Turtles" demonstrations are currently being held at 6617 Padre Boulevard, South Padre Island, Tx [across from the Tiki] where you will see a lifetime of turtle memorabilia. Click here for our current schedule of shows and viewing hours.

STI Volunteer Mary Laddis explains how certain pieces of trash - a string of shredded balloons, plastic bags, and a milk carton - can look like food to a sea turtle. The turtles can't digest plastic and can die of starvation as a result of eating it.
Ever see a turtle shell from the inside out? It may be tempting, but catching a ride with a sea turtle by grabbing hold of its shell as it swims by is NOT a good idea, and could in fact fatally injure the turtle.

The days of dressing up the turtles and showing off their "tricks" are gone , but volunteers offer educational guided tours about the five species of the Gulf of Mexico, anatomy and problems associated with these endangered species.
This photo shows Isaac a Hawksbill Sea Turtle. Another resident hawksbill was rescued and brought to STI after swallowing a fisherman's baited hook. Much of his throat was removed in the ensuing operation, so now he must be hand-fed food cut up into tiny pieces.
